Coach’s quick action saves child’s life after baseball incident in Henefer

HENEFER, Utah — A coach’s quick response helped save a child’s life Tuesday after the child was struck by a baseball and subsequently suffered a medical emergency at Henefer Town Park during baseball practice.

North Summit Fire District was dispatched at 5 p.m., but even before emergency crews arrived, a coach recognized the seriousness of the situation and immediately began performing CPR, according to the fire district.

Firefighters arrived approximately two minutes after being dispatched and continued lifesaving care. Crews administered a defibrillation shock and were able to restore the child’s pulse.

The child was transported by University of Utah AirMed to Primary Children’s Hospital for continued treatment.

North Summit Fire District credited the coach’s immediate action with making a critical difference, as well as those who assisted at the scene and helped emergency crews provide care. The fire district did not release additional information about the child, citing respect for the child and family.

The district said the incident also highlighted the importance of CPR and automated external defibrillator, or AED, training in the community.

“Learn CPR. Know where the nearest AED is. Be willing to act. You may save a life,” the fire district said.
