Heat wave to bake Utah this weekend as temperatures climb well above normal

PARK CITY, Utah — Utah is heading into what forecasters say could be the hottest stretch of the summer so far, with widespread triple-digit temperatures expected across the Wasatch Front and unusually hot conditions reaching higher elevations in Summit County.

After fairly normal summer temperatures early in the week, cities along the Wasatch Front are expected to see multiple days above 100 degrees as the heat wave settles in this weekend. Forecast models indicate many valleys could see highs between 100 and 105 degrees this weekend, with some locations approaching daily temperature records.

Park City is forecast to climb into the low 90s Saturday and Sunday, which is roughly 10 degrees above average for mid-July and hot enough for the National Weather Service’s forecast to warn of an increased risk of heat-related illness during strenuous outdoor activity.

The heat is being driven by a strengthening ridge of high pressure building across the western United States. The same weather pattern is expected to send temperatures soaring throughout Utah while suppressing afternoon thunderstorms that typically provide some summertime cooling in the mountains.

For Summit County residents and visitors, weather models are predicting daytime highs from 87 to 96 degrees in Park City on Friday through Sunday. Overnight temperatures will continue dropping into the upper 50s and low 60s, offering some relief compared to lower-elevation communities, where warm nights are expected to prolong the heat.

Health officials recommend drinking plenty of water before heading outside, limiting strenuous activity during the hottest part of the afternoon, wearing lightweight clothing and checking on older adults, young children, and pets. UV levels remain extremely high during July, increasing the risk of heat illness and sunburn.
