UTAH — Utah hunters have two important dates to mark on their calendars as the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources opens applications for specialty bird hunts and prepares to release remaining big game permits for the 2026 season.
Migratory bird permits
Applications for permits to hunt greater sage-grouse, sandhill crane, sharp-tailed grouse, and tundra swan opened Tuesday, June 30, and will remain available through July 14 at 11 p.m. Drawing results are expected to be available by July 23.
The permits are awarded through Utah’s annual hunt drawing, and a new online draw application system is being used this year. Waterfowl hunters must register through the Harvest Information Program (HIP), and hunters age 16 and older must also purchase a federal duck stamp.
Hunters applying for tundra swan permits must also complete the required annual swan hunting orientation course.
Big game permits
Meanwhile, hunters who were unsuccessful in this year’s big game drawing will have another opportunity beginning July 7, when remaining deer, elk, and bison permits go on sale on a first-come, first-served basis.
Among the available permits are:
- Unlimited general-season archery elk permits
- Unlimited youth general-season elk permits
- Remaining general-season buck deer permits
- Remaining limited-entry deer and elk permits
- Unlimited over-the-counter bison permits for the Nine Mile hunting unit
Additional elk permit sales continue throughout July, with adult any-bull elk permits becoming available July 9 and spike bull elk permits on July 16.
Hunters purchasing permits online should expect a virtual waiting room due to high demand. Permits can also be purchased at DWR offices and participating license agents, though hours may vary.
A valid permit for designated animals is required in addition to a hunting license.
More information about permit availability, application deadlines and the 2026 hunting regulations is available on the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources website.
