PROVO CANYON, Utah — A man died Sunday evening after crashing while paragliding in a remote, steep section of Provo Canyon near Mount Timpanogos, according to officials.
At approximately 6 p.m. on June 21, the adult man contacted Central Dispatch and reported that he had gone down in a narrow ravine on the north side of Provo Canyon and sustained serious injuries. He indicated he was in a very remote and difficult-to-access area high in the mountains.
Due to the terrain and elevation, rescue crews launched a multi-helicopter response to locate the patient and reach the crash site. Two helicopters were used to search the rugged canyon area, while a third was staged to assist with transport.
Once the man was located, rescuers were flown as close as possible to the site and initiated a technical rescue operation in extremely steep and hazardous conditions.
Despite the coordinated response and rescue efforts, the paraglider died from injuries sustained in the crash.
Investigators with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office and personnel from the Utah Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene for further investigation.
Officials said the identity of the victim will not be released at this time, pending notification of next of kin.
