PARK CITY, Utah — The Park City Council approved a resolution Thursday prohibiting open flames and fireworks within city limits from May 1 through Oct. 31, marking the earliest such restriction has taken effect.
City officials said the proactive measure comes as Park City heads into summer with elevated wildfire risk following one of the lowest snowpack years on record. The decision is based on ongoing drought conditions, low fuel moisture, and forecasts pointing to a hot, dry season.
“Wildfire remains Park City’s most likely and potentially most dangerous natural hazard, threatening homes, businesses, wildlife habitats, and the broader community,” the city said in a statement.
The ban does not apply to previously permitted fire pits, gas stoves, or charcoal grills used according to manufacturer guidelines.
Residents may request exceptions through the Park City Building Department, with applications reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
