Summit County begins solid waste action plan update, invites public input

SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah — Summit County is updating its long-range approach to trash and recycling, launching an action plan addendum to the county’s 2018 Solid Waste Master Plan with the goal of extending the life of the county landfill by an additional 10 years beyond current projections.

County staff began public engagement earlier this month through a Flash Vote survey to understand residents’ current waste habits, priorities, and values.

The survey drew responses from 381 people who were invited — 381 people — giving the county an early snapshot of how residents handle trash, recycling, and composting, what they see as the biggest obstacles, and what changes would make it easier to reduce waste.

Summit County said survey results are now available to the public through an online dashboard.

The next phase of outreach will move in person, with two community events planned in early February. County representatives said the meetings will cover what they learned from the survey, how the action plan process works, and where the county is seeking help to reduce waste and increase diversion. Staff from the county’s Landfill and Sustainability teams are expected to attend.

Summit County said additional updates on waste reduction and diversion efforts will roll out in the months ahead.
