MT2030 honors Park City Chamber for leadership in climate collaboration

PARK CITY, Utah — The Park City Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau has been awarded the Mountain Towns 2030 (MT2030) Climate Action Collaboration of the Year for its partnership with the Park City Community Foundation and ReFED on the Zero Food Waste Restaurant Cohort. This pilot program aims to reduce food waste within the local restaurant industry.

This award recognizes partnerships that transform shared sustainability goals into measurable progress. Launched in June 2024 by the Park City Community Foundation, the Zero Food Waste initiative seeks to eliminate food waste from the Summit County landfill by 2030. The program began with a collaboration between the foundation and Momentum Recycling, which introduced curbside food waste collection to the community. It has since expanded to include the restaurant cohort, engaging the broader food service sector.

The restaurant cohort involves collaboration among the Park City Chamber, Park City Community Foundation, and ReFED to assist local businesses in reducing waste and diverting food from landfills. Currently, eleven restaurants and catering services are participating, with most composting through Momentum Recycling and some donating excess food via Waste Less Solutions. ReFED hosted an all-day workshop in June and continues to offer technical support and data guidance to participants, who are also being introduced to the Green Business Program.

“We are grateful for the leadership and partnership of the Park City Chamber & Visitors Bureau on this program,” said Joel Zarrow, president and CEO of the Park City Community Foundation. “To achieve Zero Food Waste, we need the commitment of every resident, business, and visitor. This pilot allows us to listen and learn from our local restaurant and catering businesses.”

The MT2030 Climate Action Awards celebrate collaboration across mountain communities that advance measurable sustainability goals, from carbon reduction to waste diversion.
