Park City Cardboard Sled Derby canceled due to warm weather

PARK CITY, Utah — The 2025 Cardboard Sled Derby in Park City has been canceled due to unseasonably warm weather and insufficient snow, Park City Recreation announced Thursday.

Park City Recreation attempted to relocate the popular winter event to the Library sled hill, but to no avail.

“We’re extremely saddened to announce that the 2025 Cardboard Sled Derby has been canceled,” said Lauren Wall of Park City Recreation in an email to parent. “Despite our efforts to relocate the event to the Library Field, we’ve been notified that they will be unable to groom this hill and don’t believe the snow will hold up over the next few days.”

Despite the cancellation, organizers still plan to recognize participants’ creative efforts. Contestants are encouraged to share photos of their sleds and costumes on social media for judging, with prizes still to be awarded.

“Although we can’t race, we still want to see your creativity,” Wall said.

Participants can submit their entries on the Park City Recreation Facebook page or Instagram account.

Officials confirmed that all registration fees will be automatically refunded in the coming days.

The annual event typically draws a slew of participants who construct sleds made entirely of cardboard, tape, and paint before racing them down a sled hill.

Park City Recreation expressed hope that the derby will return next winter under more favorable conditions.
