Sound and story: Hamm’s new mystery explores LA’s dark past

PARK CITY, Utah — Actor Jon Hamm says audio storytelling opens new doors for marginalized narratives that might struggle to find traditional outlets.

Speaking at the Variety x Audible Cocktails and Conversations panel during the Sundance Film Festival on Sunday, Hamm and fellow creators discussed their upcoming Audible original series “The Big Fix: A Jack Bergin Mystery.”

“When the financial imperative isn’t about making a billion dollars, you can tell these stories,” said Hamm, who plays former FBI agent turned private investigator Jack Bergin in the 1957 Los Angeles-set drama. “It’s about giving people an opportunity to learn and connect.”

The series, a follow-up to “The Big Lie,” explores themes of corruption, power and displacement. Hamm highlighted the story’s connection to Los Angeles history, particularly regarding Chavez Ravine.

“This is a story about an inconvenient truth,” Hamm said. “In Los Angeles, a lot of people love the Dodgers, but they also remember Chavez Ravine. It’s important to not forget that and to talk about it.”

Director Aaron Lipstadt said the project found new life as an audio drama after initial film plans stalled. The production relies heavily on sound design, using elements like lighter flicks and typewriter sounds to create atmosphere.

“When we couldn’t make it as a movie, the idea of telling the story through Audible became an opportunity we couldn’t pass up,” Lipstadt said. “It’s about creating a picture with sound.”

The series also stars Alia Shawkat and Ana de la Reguera. It debuts exclusively on Audible April 24.
