Summit County residents invited to shape community project funding
SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah – Summit County residents will soon have a chance to weigh in on how federal development funds could be used to improve their communities.
The county is eligible to apply to the Department of Workforce Services’ Community Development Block Grant Small Cities Program (CDBG). The federally funded grant provides money for local projects like new water lines, fire stations, food banks and homeless shelters. Before submitting any specific proposals, county officials will hold a public hearing on December 11 to gather input from residents.
The CDBG program, administered by Utah’s Housing and Community Development Division, is designed to support small cities and counties with community improvements. If Summit County moves forward with applying, a second public hearing will be held to discuss specific proposed projects.
The timeline moves quickly after the initial hearing – income surveys must be approved by January 1, 2025, and final grant applications are due by January 15. The state will review applications in early 2025, with funding decisions expected to be announced in May.
For Summit County residents interested in learning more or sharing ideas about potential community improvements, the public hearing offers a chance to help shape how these federal funds might be used in their area. While specific projects aren’t on the table yet, citizen input at this stage will help guide what kinds of proposals the county pursues.
The public hearing will be held at 6 p.m. during the Summit County Council meeting on Dec. 11. Those interested in attending can join via Zoom or dial in 1-301-715-8592, Webinar ID: 772 302 472.
