Park City’s Rules of the Road guide for 2025 Sundance Film Festival now available for businesses

Permits and deadlines outlined for non-affiliated entities; strict trademark regulations apply

PARK CITY, Utah Park City officials have released the 2025 Sundance Film Festival Rules of the Road, detailing requirements for businesses and organizations operating during the event, scheduled from Jan. 23 to Feb. 2. The guide outlines necessary permits, deadlines, and regulations, specifically targeting entities not affiliated with the Sundance Institute. Key permits include business licenses, building permits, and special event-related permissions such as temporary beverage licenses and crowd management plans.

The guide emphasizes that any organization operating without affiliation to the Sundance Institute must adhere to Park City’s rules. This includes acquiring relevant business licenses, which must be obtained in person or through a designated representative. The festival’s trademark use is strictly regulated, with potential penalties for unauthorized commercial use of the Sundance brand, including civil penalties or license revocations.

Interested parties must contact Park City’s deputy building official, JJ Trussell (jj.trussell@parkcity.org, 435.659.9249), for guidance on permits and regulations. A range of application deadlines is set, with requirements like convention sales licenses due on Dec. 13 and temporary structure permits by Dec. 16, 2024. More information can be found on Park City Municipal’s website.

A film permit is mandatory for outdoor filming during the festival and must be submitted at least 21 days in advance. The city’s enforcement efforts aim to balance local business interests with preserving the festival’s brand integrity and smooth operations during one of Park City’s busiest times of the year.
