Elizabeth Ridge wildfire at 105 acres, 20% contained
Officials warn of hazardous "snags" as containment efforts continue
SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah — The estimated size of the Elizabeth Ridge Fire has been revised from 135 acres to 105 acres, thanks to improved mapping. The fire is 20% contained, officials reported Wednesday.
Thirty firefighters, including a hot shot crew and two engine crews, are working to confine and contain the blaze. Despite strong winds in recent days, the fire has remained within containment lines.
“Even with the rain and snow, the fire is established in timber, and although fire activity is diminished, it continues to burn in heavy down and dead fuels,” fire officials said.
Cooler temperatures, precipitation, and increased humidity have aided containment efforts. However, hazards persist, particularly from numerous dead and fire-weakened trees, known as “snags.”
“Firefighter and public safety is the highest priority,” officials emphasized, noting the danger these snags pose, especially during periods of strong, gusty winds.
Road and area closures remain in effect to ensure public and firefighter safety.
The fire is burning in the dense timber of the Uinta Mountains. The fire is located north of the North Slope Road, west of Lyman, Little Lyman, and Fish Lake, and is moving eastward.
