Park City School Board renews superintendent’s contract in 3-2 vote
Dr. Jill Gildea's term extended through 2026 amid debate over timing and leadership stability
Correction: A previous version of this story misidentified and misquoted board member Wendy Crossland as having voted against the renewal of the superintendent’s contract.
PARK CITY, Utah — The Park City School District Board of Education voted to renew Superintendent Dr. Jill Gildea’s contract through June 2026 during their August 20, 2024 meeting. The decision came after numerous discussions and a community petition to cancel the contract. The superintendent contract was ultimately awarded to Gildea with a 3-2 vote.
Proponents of the contract extension cited the need for stability and continuity, especially with three new board members set to take office in January 2025. Board member Andrew Caplan emphasized the importance of maintaining leadership during the transition period, saying, “It’s our responsibility to ensure that the district has consistent leadership, particularly as we continue to navigate significant initiatives and changes.”
Those opposed to the renewal argued that the decision should have been delayed until the new board members could evaluate Dr. Gildea’s performance.
The discussion also highlighted the importance of maintaining a respectful dialogue within the community. Caplan addressed the broader context, urging community members to focus on constructive discussions rather than personal attacks. “Let’s not lose track that this is still a wonderful place to live. We need to give each other grace and work together as a community,” he added.
The renewed contract will allow Dr. Gildea to continue leading the district through ongoing projects, including construction updates, academic programs, and staff relations. The contract includes cancellation provisions, leaving some flexibility for future board decisions.
