Antelope Island reopens after fire

SYRACUSE, Utah — The #AntelopeFire is fully contained after burning 59 acres of the island’s approx. 28,000 acres.

Shortly after the fire started, campers and visitors were evacuated from Antelope Island State Park and the park was closed. One of the campers, Amanda Grana, stated, “Thank you. We were one of the campers that had to leave. It was handled very well and we appreciate everything.”

Fire suppression continued until Pioneer Day

The fire was declared out as of Monday night around 7 p.m. Crews were out again the morning of July 23 checking on and extinguishing any remaining hot spots. Antelope Island State Park remained closed until the all-clear from the Fire Department.

The park is now open. Fire crews remain on the north end of the island. Please slow down and be cautious as you enter the park. You will be entering the island on the north-east side of the island.

Over 30 human-caused fires have already occurred this fire season

The cause of the fire is confirmed to be human-caused and is currently under investigation. The visitor center remains closed due to renovations which started before the fire.

Antelope Island remains under extreme fire conditions

The park has been and continues to be under stage 2 fire restrictions since July 16. This means

-No open fires of any kind. Devices with shutoff valves (pressurized liquid or gas) are permitted when used in an area at least three feet from flammable material.

-Smoking is only permitted in vehicles or paved areas clear of vegetation.

-Discharging of fireworks is (always) prohibited.

-No cutting, welding or grinding in areas of dry vegetation.

-Motorcycles, chainsaws, ATVs or other small internal combustion engines must have a working spark arrestor.
