Wildfire Wednesday update: Fires raging in Utah

UTAH—This week, there were 49 new wildfires in Utah and moderate fire activity throughout the state. Since January 1, 2024, 537 wildfires have burned. 402 of them were human-caused, 86 were naturally caused, and just shy of 40,000 acres have burned.

More than 18,760 wildland fire firefighters and support personnel are assigned to wildfires nationwide, which have burned over 3 million acres since January.

Over the weekend, several areas across the state were heavily affected by lightning, the Graph Point fire in southern Utah and the Spears Fire in northeastern Utah are both examples of destructive the destructive power of lightning, each both burning over 1200 acres.

The Deer Springs fire (human-caused) burning near Bryce Canyon has reached 11,765 acres and is now 80% contained. A larger fire, the Silver King fire, is 17,648 acres and is 20% contained. The Silver King fire is located south of I-70 in the Fishlake National Forest.

The fire potential impact will remain moderate throughout the week when monsoons are typically active.
