Man dies after skiing off 100-foot cliff in backcountry near Snowbasin Resort

HUNTSVILLE, Utah — A 49-year-old man died Tuesday, Feb. 13, after he skied off a 100-foot cliff while skiing in the backcountry near Snowbasin Resort the day prior.

According to a statement from the Resort, the man left the resort boundaries on Monday, Feb. 12. While skiing in the extreme backcountry terrain, the man accidentally fell off a cliff and re-entered the resort area.

The man was found by ski patrol near the John Paul area and was immediately taken to the hospital in critical condition. He later died from his injuries. His identity has not yet been released.

The Weber County Sheriff’s Office reminded those who ski in the backcountry to be fully prepared and equipped with an avalanche beacon, shovel, probe and at least one partner.
