Some Utahns have until Jan. 9 to change voter affiliation under new state code
The new deadline will primarily impact affiliated voters wishing to vote in a closed primary
UTAH — Some Utah voters will only have until Jan. 9 to change their party affiliation following recent changes to Utah State Code.
According to the Salt Lake County clerk’s website, two Utah State Code changes that went into effect on May 5 alter the timeframe in which voters can adjust their party affiliation prior to the March 5 and June 25 primary elections.
The new deadline will primarily impact affiliated voters wishing to vote in a closed primary.
While the Democratic, Independent American and United Utah parties hold open primaries, the Republican, Libertarian and Constitution parties hold closed primaries, only open to those affiliated with that specific party.
How will these changes impact voters currently affiliated with a political party?
Ballots will be mailed to registered voters affiliated with a political party. However, to vote in the closed primary of a different party, voters must affiliate with that party on or before Jan. 9 to receive a mail-in ballot.
How will these changes affect unaffiliated voters?
Voters who are currently unaffiliated can affiliate with a party on or before Feb. 23 for the presidential primary, or June 14 for the regular primary to receive a mail-in ballot. They can also choose to remain unaffiliated and request an open party ballot online.
What about those not registered to vote?
To vote in the presidential primary, eligible residents must register to vote on or before Feb. 23, or June 14 for the regular primary. Once registered, voters can either affiliate with a party to receive a ballot for an open or closed primary, or request an open primary ballot if they choose to remain unaffiliated.

Will these changes effect the November general elections?
These changes to Utah State Code will not impact the November general elections. Voters will be able to cast their ballot in favor of any candidate of any political party during this time regardless of party affiliation.
