Attend Utah Avalanche Center’s workshop this Saturday in Kamas
It's a full day of fast moving, 15-minute presentations with five minutes for Q&A
KAMAS, Utah — The Utah Avalanche Center is holding its 16th annual Utah Snow and Avalanche Workshop on Saturday, Nov. 4, at Kamas’ sDejoria Center.
Utah’s avalanche community will team up with snow professionals around the West to share avalanche knowledge.
“Regional avalanche workshops are the most time and cost-effective way to build and refresh advanced avalanche skills,” Craig Gordon told TownLift.
Gordon has been forecasting with the flagship organization for 25 seasons. “In the past quarter century I’ve seen a couple big avalanches along the way and also witnessed the ginormous evolution of our snow sport industry.”
His roots run deep in avalanche education and outreach. In the mid 2000s, he created the popular and poignant Know Before You Go avalanche awareness program which is used around the world.
Gordon recognized that the collective snow community needed a voice and a platform to share the stories, historic institutional knowledge, and most importantly, lessons learned.
In an effort to bring the backcountry community together and learn from snow pros, athletes, and recreationists alike, he spearheaded and launched the Utah Snow and Avalanche Workshop, now in its 16th year.
“Winter is right around the corner and no matter how we recreate on the snow, USAW is a great refresher for the seasoned professional or someone just getting started on their journey,” he said.
USAW is a full day of fast moving, 15-minute presentations with five minutes for Q&A. USAW highlights snow science, avalanche dynamics, rescue techniques, weather factors that made last year so unique, and what’s in store for this year, along with stories and lessons learned from members of the snow sports community.
This year, USAW comes to the Wasatch Back’s backcountry’s backyard, live and in-person from 8:30-4 p.m. $60 gets a full day of life saving avy’knowledge, lunch, and an after-event social.
