Woman killed by falling tree during thunderstorm in Clearfield

CLEARFIELD, Utah — A woman was killed by a falling tree while riding her bike in Clearfield on Wednesday, July 19.

According to a statement from the Clearfield City Police Department, the Clearfield Dispatch Center received a 911 call from a witness at approximately 7:18 p.m. on Wednesday who reported seeing a tree fall on another person riding a bike on the Rio Grand Trail between 200 South and 300 North near 500 West in Clearfield.

At the time of the incident a thunderstorm and strong winds were moving through the area.

Officers from the Clearfield City Police Department and members of the North Davis Fire District responded to the scene and found an unconscious 68-year-old woman with traumatic injuries pinned beneath a large tree.

The responders were able to lift the tree enough to move the woman out from underneath it, then they began to perform lifesaving measures.

The woman was transported in critical condition to Holy Cross Hospital in Layton where she later succumbed to her injuries.

“The incident is still being investigated but initial information suggests this was a tragic accident likely caused by high winds blowing a tree down,” said a statement from the Clearfield City Police Department.

The victim’s identity has not been shared at this time, pending notification of next of kin.
