BCA Tracker4, Pieps and Black Diamond Avalanche Transceivers recalled

The Utah Avalanche Center has shared two important voluntary Avalanche Transceiver recall notifications. If you own one of the affected models both manufactures are offering a free replacement. Steps to participate in the voluntary recall and specific models with qualifying serial number ranges are outlined below.

BCA TRACKER4 SAFETY RECALL NOTICE:

CHECK FOR SERIAL NUMBERS STARTING 21H05 and 21H06. Backcountry Access, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada, is issuing a voluntary recall of a small number of Tracker4 avalanche transceivers due to a plastics production issue that may result in the switch falling off the transceiver.

There have been no reported incidents in which the Tracker4 switch issue has contributed to a fatality, injury, or other damage.

This issue impacts certain Tracker4 beacons with serial numbers that start with 21H05 or 21H06 sold after June 1, 2021. The affected units may have been purchased as a part of a Tracker4 rescue package or as a standalone unit. If you own an affected Tracker4 with serial numbers that start with 21H05 or 21H06, please fill out the Tracker4 Replacement Form for a free replacement unit.

PIEPS AND BLACK DIAMOND AVALANCHE TRANSCEIVERS IN NORTH AMERICA:

Affected models include the PIEPS Pro BT, Powder BT, DSP Sport, DSP Pro, DSP Pro Ice, Micro Button BT, Micro BT Sensor and Micro BT Race avalanche transceivers and the Black Diamond Recon BT and Guide BT avalanche transceivers. The reason for the voluntary recall is related to a material handling / assembly anomaly in manufacturing which may result in the avalanche transceiver not being able to switch from SEND mode into SEARCH mode. When this occurs, the skier can suffer serious bodily harm or death.

This Voluntary Recall follows a previous Safety Check Notice from April 2022. If you are in possession of one of these avalanche transceivers, stop using them immediately and perform a safety check to verify if the device switches from SEND to SEARCH mode by following instructions on our website. If you find that a mode is not working properly, the affected device should no longer be used and must be returned immediately to Black Diamond / PIEPS for repair or replacement free of charge.
