Ponderosa Restoration Project will prescribe burns along Mirror Lake Highway

SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah — The U.S. Forest Service Heber-Kamas Ranger District was scheduled to begin hand ignitions on Thursday as part of the Ponderosa Restoration Project, which is taking place roughly 10 miles east of Kamas along the Mirror Lake Highway (SR-150).

Prescribed fire is being used to remove the understory of juniper, mountain brush, and lodgepole pine. The goal is to create openings on the forest floor so that ponderosa pine can regenerate naturally.
