Summit County population increased 1.1% in the past year

SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah — The Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute at the University of Utah published their state and county population estimates this week.

The data says that Summit County has grown 1.06% since July 1, 2020 — adding 449 new residents. The net migration share of growth in the county is 48%.

(Net migration = people moving into the county – people moving out of the county)

Utah as a whole added roughly 71,936 people since the 2020 census, according to the report. That puts the total state population around 3,343,552.

State-level net migration is at its highest level since 2005, at 34,858 people. Net migration played a key role in growth, increasing by 15% compared to last year.

Iron County had the fastest growth rate at 6.2%, followed by Tooele County (4.1%), Washington County (4%), and Utah County (2.9%).

Summit County contributed 0.8% to the share of state population growth. Utah County led the way at 33%, followed by Salt Lake County (15.9%) and Washington County (12.5%).

“Utah began the decade with a year of robust population growth, the second-highest recorded net migration, and the lowest natural increase since 1975. Utah’s population growth started to moderate in 2018, but this year’s estimates indicate a rebound as Utahns move through a global pandemic and start a new economic cycle,” writes Emily Harris, senior demographer at the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute.

“The Greater Salt Lake and Southwestern regions continue to expand and attract migrants from inside and outside Utah, fueling 97.3% of the state’s growth.”
