Farmer’s Market Spotlight: Volker’s Bakery

Today and next Wednesday are the last Park City Farmer’s Markets of the season. Open 11 to 5 pm at Silver King parking lot.

Volker Ritzinger moved from Austria to Salt Lake to play professional ice hockey. He decided to continue the family tradition of baking by launching Volker’s Bakery, a Kamas-based European-style bakery. Two decades ago, Volker started managing the Park City Farmer’s Market. At that time, there were only three farmer’s markets in Utah.

Volker recruited organic, no-spray farmers to sell their goods at the Park City Farmer’s Market. In the early days, he convinced farmers to attend by paying for their gas. Now Park City Farmer’s Market is one of over 40 in Utah. While Volker oversees the management of Park City’s market, he also participates in over 20 markets around the state.

Volker loves to sell his delectable bread and pastries at farmer’s markets because it gives him a connection to the community.

I love farmer’s markets. It’s direct marketing; it’s way better. You can talk to people and tell them what you have. — Volker
