Freshies Lobster Co. featured in new book

Freshies Lobster Co. was recently featured in a book released April 20th by journalist David Page, titled Food Americana: The Remarkable People and Incredible Stories Behind America’s Favorite Dishes. Page, a two-time Emmy-winning television producer, and the creator of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, has taken his knowledge, curiosity, and love of American food to print with this recent release.

Food Americana is an entertaining mix of food culture, pop culture, nostalgia, restaurant personalities, and everything that’s new on Americans’ plates. The book includes a section about Freshies Lobster Co., recognized by Maine’s Down East Magazine for making the best lobster roll in the world.

I grew up in New England and it’s great to see Freshies owner Lorin Smaha doing such a great job bringing a New England classic to the great state of Utah!

Food Americana tells the story of how Americans formed a national cuisine from a world of flavors, and how that process continues today. It is a riveting ride into every aspect of what we eat and why, filled with eye-opening information, revealing anecdotes, a healthy serving of humor, with a classic recipe at the end of each chapter.

Page explores the latest trends in American food, from artisanal pizza, to handmade ice cream, to regional foods of China and Mexico, the upscaling of barbecue, burgers, and bagels, sushi as comfort food, and even the resurgence of American caviar, which was once so abundant it was given away for free to encourage drinking at bars.

Discover a taste of everywhere from pizza school in San Fransisco to a lobster boat off the coast of Maine. Meet remarkable restaurant owners and chefs from across the country, like a mad scientist ice cream maker, the woman running a sushi bar in an Oklahoma gas station, the chef re-inventing traditional Chinese food, and the Popeyes executive who launched the chicken sandwich war of 2019.

Filled with some of the most significant people in the food industry, Food Americana includes multi-Michelin starred Daniel Boulud, farm-to-table legend Alice Waters, pizza pioneer Chris Bianco, co-founder of Lender’s Bagels Marvin Lender, co-founder of Ben & Jerry’s Jerry Greenfield, Five Guys founder Jerry Murrell, food journalism legend Ruth Reichl, celebrity butcher Pat LaFrieda, and Chinese food pioneer Cecilia Chiang.

Released after a year in which Americans were deprived of the social interaction of joining one another for meals, Food Americana questions how changes in our society are reflected on our plates. Food Americana is for sale on Amazon and at select retailers.
