Ted Ligety to Retire After Final US Ski Team Event
Park City Gold Medalist Ted Ligety announced his retirement today via the New York Times and Instagram.
“Retirement!” Ted wrote on his Instagram page. He told the New York Times that his decision is based on changing priorities and a desire to spend more time with his growing family. He and his wife, Mia Pascoe, have three young sons.
Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy will host Ligety’s last race, the Giant Slalom at the 2021 Cortina Alpine World Ski Championships Feb 19.
At the age of 21, Ligety impressed the world with his first Olympic gold medal finish in the combined event (downhill and slalom) at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy. One of the most decorated U.S. ski racers in history, Ligety won two Olympic gold medals, earned 52 World Cup podiums across five disciplines and has five World Champion titles and seven World Championship medals.
Ted grew up in Park City and graduated from the Winter Sports School in 2002. He is a five-time GS titleholder (2008, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014). To add to it, he’s an entrepreneur too. With his friend Carlo Salmini, they started Shred, a ski accessories company.
