Summit County man, ex-USA Climbing coach, sentenced for sexual exploitation of a minor

SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah — A Summit County resident and former USA Climbing coach has been sentenced to prison following his guilty plea to sexual exploitation of a minor.

Matthew Maddison, 37, was sentenced September 11 by 3rd District Judge Richard Mrazik to a term of one to 15 years in the Utah State Prison. Maddison pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree felony sexual exploitation of a minor. Twelve additional counts, including three first-degree felony counts of aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor, were dismissed with prejudice as part of the plea agreement.

Maddison was arrested in April after investigators linked him to illegal material being shared online. He previously worked as a strength and conditioning coach and speed team manager for USA Climbing, which placed him on unpaid administrative leave following his arrest.

The court recommended Maddison receive credit for 137 days already served and set restitution at $0. He has 30 days to file a notice of appeal. The exact length of Maddison’s incarceration will be determined later by the state’s Board of Pardons and Parole as outlined by state law.
