Canyonlands reopens Needles District as Babylon Fire conditions improve

SAN JUAN COUNTY, Utah — The Needles District of Canyonlands National Park reopened to visitors Friday, July 17, as fire conditions continue to improve following the Babylon Fire, though several backcountry roads remain closed.

The reopening is part of a coordinated effort among the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and other state and local agencies to restore public access where it is safe while allowing firefighters to continue suppression and rehabilitation work.

The Needles District reopened at 8 a.m. Saturday. However, Elephant Hill, Lavender Canyon, and Davis Canyon roads remain closed to motor vehicles and bicycles due to ongoing fire activity and recovery efforts. Visitors are encouraged to check current conditions before traveling and to respect all posted closures.

The Babylon Fire prompted widespread closures across southeastern Utah in recent weeks as firefighters worked to contain the blaze. With fire behavior moderating and containment increasing, land managers have begun reopening public lands in phases while balancing visitor access with firefighter safety.

The National Park Service said public lands are vital to San Juan County’s communities, recreation economy and visitors. Agencies will continue evaluating additional reopenings as conditions allow while ensuring they do not interfere with ongoing fire response operations.

Officials remind visitors to remain alert, obey all closure signs and avoid entering burned areas or active work zones. Conditions can change quickly, and additional restrictions may be implemented if fire activity increases.
