PARK CITY, Utah — The X Games is adding a team-based twist to action sports competition, and Park City is among the first cities to claim a stake in the new venture.
X Games announced Thursday that XC Park City and XC Los Angeles (summer league) had been purchased by private equity investor Allen Thorpe through his firm, Pipedream Capital. Park City joins New York City as a confirmed host for the debut winter season of the X Games League, a team competition format that represents a significant departure from the individual-athlete model that has long defined the sport.
“The MoonPay X Games League creates an entirely new category of sports ownership,” Thorpe said. “As a native Californian and 20-year Park City resident, I’m especially excited to build championship organizations in both Los Angeles and Park City.”
The league format borrows heavily from traditional team sports. A draft is scheduled for Sept. 16, during which the four clubs will build rosters of 10 athletes, five men and five women. Rosters must include both skiers and snowboarders. Competition will take place across a three-stop winter tour featuring the disciplines X Games fans know well: slopestyle, big air, knuckle huck and superpipe.
Jeremy Bloom, CEO of X Games, said the Thorpe investment signals momentum for the league’s long-term vision.
“We’re creating permanent teams, season-long storylines, stronger opportunities for athletes, and deeper connections with fans,” Bloom said. “Allen immediately understood that opportunity, and we’re thrilled to welcome him to the X Games family.”
Park City’s selection fits naturally given its deep ties to ski culture and its history as an Olympic venue. The league’s team framework is designed to shift attention beyond individual podium finishes and toward a broader, season-long competitive narrative in a sport that has traditionally spotlighted solo performances.
The X Games League’s summer edition is already underway, with skateboarding and BMX events set to kick off June 26 in Sacramento, California. The summer circuit includes clubs in Los Angeles, New York City, Sao Paulo and Tokyo.
