A Juneuary surprise on the high peaks

Snow falls at Alta on June 28, 2026 blanketing Albion Basin and frosting the pines as summer takes a back seat in the high Wasatch Photo: Alta
ALTA, Utah — Summer officially arrived a week ago, but the Wasatch and Uintas didn’t get the memo. Overnight into June 28, a band of high mountain snow left a fresh dusting across the region’s highest terrain.
The top of the Mirror Lake Highway picked up a coating, along with Alta’s Sugarloaf Peak, Snowbird’s Mineral Basin, and the Brighton Crest lift up at the ridgeline. Nothing that’s sticking around, but enough to coat the peaks white and remind everyone that is can snow in every month of the year in Utah.
If you’re heading into the high country, pack a layer.
