PARLEYS CANYON — A semi truck hauling an estimated 25 million honey bees broke down while climbing Parleys Canyon Tuesday, prompting firefighters to step in for a rescue mission that was pretty different from most emergency calls.
According to the Unified Fire Authority, firefighters from the Millcreek station helped keep the bees alive while mechanics worked on the disabled truck in the unseasonably hot weather.
“While mechanics worked on the truck, firefighters carefully used a hose to mist the trailer and keep the bees cool, calm, and safe in the heat,” UFA said in a social media post.
The bees were especially vulnerable because they rely on airflow from the moving truck to regulate the temperature inside the hives. With the truck parked in direct sun during warm weather, temperatures inside the trailer could have quickly become dangerous.
The truck was carrying approximately 480 hives, with each hive containing between 40,000 and 60,000 bees.
Despite working just feet away from millions of buzzing passengers, firefighters managed the operation sting-free.
“Honestly one of the coolest reminders that first responders don’t just save people… sometimes they save 25 million bees too,” UFA said.
Thanks to some quick thinking, the bees are expected to keep on buzzing.
