Kamas, Utah — North America’s first professional skijoring series wrapped up its inaugural Frontier Tour this weekend at the High Star Ranch in Kamas, where the sport crowned its first-ever world champions across four divisions. Each champion took home a custom buckle and cash prize.
Spectators were treated to high-speed races with high stakes, and even got to see a three-way tie breaker in the Pro Division. Team Montana’s Josh Abbott and Colin Cook won the second tiebreaker amongst three teams tied with 58 points at the end of the six-event tour.
“I have been around this sport for a decade, and the elusive question amongst skijoring athletes has always been: Who are the very best?” said PRO Skijor co-founder Brian Gardner. “No one expected a three-way tie in the Pro Division, but that just shows how elite and competitive these teams are. Thanks to the athletes and the fans, we now have an officially recognized World Champion team for the first time in history.”
Athletes also voted for MVP awards at the LOBOS 1707 gala following the event. Most Valuable Horse went to Katherine Licht’s Babes Last Rascal, Most Valuable Rider was 17-year-old Dylanne Free, and Most Valuable Skier went to KJ Savaria. PRO Skijor and LOBOS 1707 handed out a special All About the Finish Award to Long Island native Bryan Coll, who completed a full run on a single ski at the Heber City event and is recovering from a crash two weeks later.
The weekend also marked Utah’s first-ever PRO Skijoring Day, officially proclaimed by Governor Spencer J. Cox on February 28. The day celebrates Utah’s ski culture, ranching traditions, and the tour’s contribution to local tourism and the economy.
Pro Division: Montana’s Josh Abbott and Colin Cook won the 2nd tiebreaker amongst three teams tied with 58 points at the end of the 6 event tour. Cook also took home the second place buckle with longtime vet Dennis Alverson.
