Wasatch County mourns father killed in backcountry avalanche

An adult man was killed in a Wasatch County avalanche Wednesday while snowmobiling with his son, who used a beacon to locate him.

WASATCH COUNTY, Utah — An adult man was killed Wednesday in an avalanche while snowmobiling with his son in the Big Flat area near Snake Creek, west of Midway, according to the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office.

The avalanche was reported around 4 p.m., and Wasatch County Search and Rescue, along with sheriff’s deputies, responded to the scene. Authorities said the juvenile son used an avalanche beacon to locate his father and dig him out of the snow, though he was already deceased.

“The Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and all those affected by this tragic incident,” reads the release. “We also recognize the courageous efforts of the juvenile involved and the responding personnel who assisted in this difficult situation.”

Wasatch County Search and Rescue is coordinating with the Utah Avalanche Center (UAC) regarding the slide and current backcountry conditions.

Backcountry users are urged to check the UAC website before traveling into avalanche terrain and to review current forecasts and safety guidance.
