Farewell to MINERS9

PARK CITY, Utah — After more than two years and 15 art exhibits, Peg Bodell and Sundyn Woolf are bringing MINERS9 to a close with their final show Sept. 26-28 at Park City’s Miner’s Hospital.
The journey began in September 2023 with clear goals: create an affordable opportunity for artists to show and sell their work in an intimate, friendly venue while eliminating the typical hassles of street festivals — infrastructure costs, weather concerns, jury processes and expensive applications.
“Our seasoned artist friends and new artists we have met to form lasting relationships will be our greatest take-away,” said Bodell.
It has been a labor of love for the artists and organizers, though not without its challenges.
Conquering 36 steps
The historic Miner’s Hospital presents a unique obstacle: 36 steps to the second floor with no elevator. Artists have learned to embrace the workout, with Fitbits typically exploding around noon on setup Fridays as they haul their artwork upstairs.
Despite the physical demands, the building has won over hearts. After more than two years of climbing those steps, artists and organizers have developed what Bodell calls a love-hate relationship with Park City’s frayed historic gem.
“Its spiritual residents have shown us the utmost respect over the years while watching over our art after we lock up and set the alarm on Friday and Saturday night. We hope that Park City Municipal will continue to prioritize local resident use and schedule the building for long overdue attention after Sundance departs next February. In the Miners Hospital’s next chapter an elevator would be a welcome improvement,” Bodell reflects.
A community effort
The success of MINERS9’s 14 monthly exhibits involved an entire community. As the series concludes, Bodell and Woolf extend heartfelt appreciation to PCMC Event staff, local media outlets, the PC Arts Council, family, friends and the 126 talented artists who participated in rotating exhibitions. “BRAVO!”
Final celebration
The farewell exhibit features paintings, printmaking, birdhouses, metal art, wearable fiber art, photography and jewelry from artists Amy Englebrecht, Becky Ruley and Erin Richards, Jim Sheeran, Kelly Gallagher, Kristen and Meg Streukens, Peg Bodell and Sundyn Woolf, Rick Graham, Steve Johnson and Terry Scopes.
Adding to the celebration, musician Lannie Scopes will perform Friday from 5-7 p.m. The cowboy music performer, poet, author and songwriter has entertained throughout the West and created shows including the radio program “Tunes and Tales from Tumbleweed.” He’s performed at numerous Wasatch Back fundraisers, including “Saddle Up!” for the Egyptian Theatre, and provided historical storytelling for the Park City Historical Society. Even if you haven’t seen him perform around Old Town, you’ve likely spotted his distinctive mustache.
MINERS9 will be open Friday and Saturday from noon to 7 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
