New avalanche transceiver check stations installed at Wasatch County trailheads

WASATCH COUNTY, Utah — Two new avalanche transceiver check stations have been installed at the Snake Creek and Lake Creek trailheads in Wasatch County, the Utah Snowmobile Association announced Monday.

The stations were funded through a grant from The International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association, with additional support from Weller Recreation and Action Snow Plow and Lawncare.

The Utah Avalanche Center partnered on the project, while the Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation will provide summer storage space for the equipment.

Officials also renewed contracts for existing transceiver check stations at the Chalk Creek and Nobletts trailheads to maintain safety measures in those areas.

“Always be sure to check the forecast at utahavalanchecenter.org or on UAC’s new mobile app before heading out into the backcountry,” said the Utah Snowmobile Association. “Never go out without the basics of a beacon, shovel, probe, and the knowledge of how to use them.”

The association also recommended formal avalanche education through UAC or local private companies that offer training.

“Don’t let your guard down just because of the warming weather,” they added. “We still have some sugary facets buried under the nice new snow that we see on the surface.”

Despite warming temperatures, authorities caution that avalanches remain a significant hazard for spring recreational activities and urge visitors not to become complacent about safety precautions.

Avalanche transceivers are critical safety devices that help locate people buried under snow following an avalanche.
