PARK CITY, Utah – A young boy fell from Park City Mountain’s Town Lift on Friday afternoon, suffering minor injuries after a drop near the section where the chairlift crosses over Park Avenue.
Park City Fire District spokesperson Mike Owens reported that the child fell roughly 15 feet, landing just before the safety net designed to prevent skiers from falling onto the street below. The boy sustained a cut on his chin and was transported to Primary Children’s Hospital for further evaluation, authorities said.
Owens said the boy and his father had only been on the lift for a short distance when the fall occurred. According to a post made online, a person who saw the child fall said the father wasn’t able to lower the safety bar before the child slipped off.
“I tried to catch him but couldn’t make it in time. It was a 25-30 ft belly flop on the hard deck. I stabilized his head with a few others and made sure he was alive and conscious. Then went to catch the mom and daughter as they jumped down from the lift behind. They were both in tears,” one witness wrote.
The boy’s father, still on the lift, was too far along to get off immediately. Witnesses to the event estimated the child to be approximately seven years old.
Other people who commented on the post said the event was traumatizing.
“It was horrifying,” another person wrote.
The current condition of the child is not known.
Park City Mountain spokesperson Emily McDonald provided to following statement about the incident.
“Park City Mountain confirms that on Friday, March 21, Park City Mountain Ski Patrol responded to an incident where a guest fell on Town Lift. The guest was transported to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City,” the statement read.
The resort declined to comment further on the incident, stating the resort does not release personal medical information.
