Triple victory: Park City Girls Basketball teams dominate home stand

PARK CITY, Utah — The Miners Girls Basketball Teams of Park City High School swept all three of their home games against Granger High on Wednesday night.

Momentum built with each successive victory as the Freshmen/Sophomore squad set the tone, followed by JV’s strong performance, and culminating in Varsity’s win to complete the evening’s sweep.

“These amazing Miners are starting the season off strong with solid trainings and a forward-looking plan for the rest of the year.” JV Coach Jenna Schmidt told TownLift. “I’m proud of how the girls are playing and improving as one team together.”

Shmidt’s JV athletes are now 2 and 3 for this season so far, and this was Varsity’s first win. She explained that all four girls basketball coaches are new this year, herself included, however she’s certainly no stranger to the sport as a former Division I basketball player herself.

One of the Miner’s biggest cheerleaders is an employee named Senior who was born and raised in Africa and now works as a Safety Patrol/ Hall Monitor, this was one of his final games at which to be the ticket-taker for a little while and school staff say he’ll be very missed in his absence.

Coming from Congo, where his father was a high-ranking government official, he and his mother and brothers moved to Salt Lake City a few years ago, from where he commutes every school day. He had played on the U21 Congo National Soccer Team and now serves as an assistant coach for the Miner’s Soccer Teams. He’s stepping away for a while to take care of family he has in Arizona but hopes to return as soon as possible.

Senior came to the USA as a refugee while his mom and brothers had to stay in Congo after he was able to get his citizenship. “I worked to find ways to see how to legally bring them to be close to me and , Thank God, after seven years everything worked and they made it to the USA lat year,” He told TownLift.

They are fluently French speaking family and as such, Senior stops and spends time speaking in the hallways with the student’s from the French classes. His mom also sends her home-baked creations of African and French traditional pastries in for him to share with the French Culture classes for an extra sence of authenticity in their experience. Speaking of experience he said, “I’m lucky to have the opportunity to show some skill sets from my favorite sport of soccer with these awesome athletes. Go Miners!”
