Shop with a Cop: Holiday convoy hits SR 224 Dec. 7
PARK CITY, Utah — Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies will escort children on a holiday shopping spree Saturday morning along State Route 224 as part of the annual Shop with a Cop event, a tradition spanning more than two decades in the community.
“Shop with a Cop has been held for more than 22 years,” said Lt. Jay Randall of the Park City Police Department.
The program will serve over 140 children this year, with 72 participating in person, according to Randall. Between 60 and 75 officers from various agencies, including Park City Police Department, Summit County Sheriff’s Office, Utah Highway Patrol, Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife Resources and neighboring jurisdictions, will participate in the event.
The morning will begin with breakfast at the Double Tree by Hilton, which Randall said has “generously offered to provide the breakfast and the venue.” Following the meal, a police convoy will escort the children to Walmart.
“Traffic will only be impacted for a few minutes, as it will be around 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning,” Randall said. “The officers caravan in one line from the hotel to Walmart … only impacting traffic in one location for 2-3 minutes.”
The Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 3 hosts the event with funding from Berkshire Hathaway, whose employees will also provide wrapping paper and wrapping services at Walmart. Officers, who are FOP members, volunteer their time for the program.
“Our Officers are members of the FOP and donate their time for the event in anticipation of having a positive impact on those who can use an extra hand or are less served this holiday season,” Randall said.
The event is part of a broader initiative by Walmart, which began hosting holiday shopping events Dec. 4 at stores across Utah to help local children and veterans in need during the holiday season.
