Pint-sized pep: 144 mini-cheerleaders join PCHS squad for big night
PARK CITY, Utah — The energy at Dozier Field was palpable this past Friday, Sept. 27, as 144 mini-cheerleaders took to the sidelines, joining the Park City High School (PCHS) cheerleading squad. The young participants, ranging in age from 5 to 12, were welcomed into the spotlight, showcasing their newly learned cheers, jumps, and dance routines during both the game’s sideline performances and the halftime show.
In preparation for their big debut, the mini-cheerleaders attended practices on Wednesday and Thursday of last week. Under the guidance of both the junior varsity and varsity cheerleaders, the aspiring athletes immersed themselves in learning the fundamentals of cheerleading, including choreographed cheers and energetic jumps. The focus of the sessions was not only skill development but also teamwork, with the older cheerleaders fostering a supportive environment for the younger participants.
On game day, the mini-cheerleaders were decked out in vibrant bows, matching t-shirts, and held mini pom-poms in hand as they lined up alongside the PCHS cheerleaders. Encouraged by the seasoned high school squad, the younger cheerleaders enthusiastically performed for the crowd, adding an extra layer of excitement to the evening’s game.
“The mini-cheer program is a great way to bring the community together and introduce these kids to cheerleading at an early age,” said Brenner Nelson, a PCHS junior varsity cheerleader. “It’s wonderful to see how much fun they have while learning something new.”
The event not only gave the younger children a chance to shine but also demonstrated the strong connection between the high school athletes and the broader Park City community. With smiles and cheers echoing through the stadium, the mini-cheerleaders were able to celebrate a memorable evening alongside their mentors.
