Illegal killing of cow moose in Wasatch County sparks investigation

Investigation underway into illegal killing of cow moose in Strawberry Valley, Utah

WASATCH COUNTY, Utah — A cow moose was found shot dead in Strawberry Valley, Utah. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is investigating the illegal killing and is asking for the public’s help to find those responsible.

The DWR says they were notified of the moose’s death on September 2 when its GPS collar began to give a mortality signal. When biologists got to the scene near Strawberry Valley, they found that the moose had been shot with archery equipment. It’s believed that the cow moose was killed on September 2 and left to waste, and no attempts were made to salvage its meat.

The DWR says that a bull moose hunt was taking place during the alleged killing. However, the antlerless (cow) moose hunt does not begin until September 21.

The carcass was also found in an area that would be easy to locate and retrieve. The DWR is asking anyone with any information about the killing to call the UTiP Hotline at 800-662-3337, text 847411, or contact Officer Ethan Justinger at 385-450-0276. A reward may be available for information leading to the prosecution of those responsible. All requests for confidentiality will be respected.
