Utah implements closed fire season starting June 1
Fire restrictions in effect through October to prevent wildfires
UTAH — Beginning June 1, Utah will enforce its annual closed fire season, lasting through October 31, 2024. The restrictions aim to reduce wildfire risks during the dry summer months.
The closed fire season dictates specific rules for burning operations on private and unincorporated lands. Utah State Law (65A-8-211) and DEQ Rule outline the conditions under which burning can occur, with stricter regulations in place from June through October. This period requires notifying the local fire department before any burning activity.
During this season, burn permits are mandatory for certain types of agricultural burning and are regulated by the State Forester. Permits can be obtained from the County Fire Warden, who is available Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at (435) 640-2075. Residents planning weekend burns should request permits by the preceding Wednesday. Burning in incorporated areas is prohibited during the closed fire season.
