New executive event chair to spearhead local Alzheimer’s walk
Justina Smith appointed to lead the 2024 event, aiming to boost support and awareness
PARK CITY, Utah — Justina Smith has been appointed the executive event chair for the 2024 Summit/Wasatch County Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Park City. Smith’s involvement aims to enhance community engagement and support for individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease in Summit and Wasatch Counties.
Smith expressed her commitment to the cause, stating, “I am honored to support the Alzheimer’s Association’s ongoing efforts. We have the potential to make a big impact on patients and their families in Summit and Wasatch Counties.”
The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is recognized globally for raising awareness and funding for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research initiatives. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Basin Recreation Fieldhouse.
The event will feature the Promise Garden ceremony, an emotive tribute to those affected by Alzheimer’s. Participants carry colored flowers representing their connection to the disease, and the ceremony is a key moment of solidarity and remembrance for them.
Lisa Phinney, development manager at the Alzheimer’s Association, expressed appreciation for Smith’s leadership, noting, “Justina’s knowledge of the financial impact Alzheimer’s can have on a family is expansive. I personally am grateful to be able to learn from Justina and work with her on this event.”
Alzheimer’s disease impacts over 6 million Americans and is a leading cause of death in the United States. In Utah, more than 34,000 people live with Alzheimer’s, with nearly 99,000 caregivers providing support. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s began in 1989 and has since mobilized millions in the quest to end Alzheimer’s and all other dementia.
