PROVO, Utah — The Park City High School Miners boys and girls swim teams competed at the state championships on the campus of Brigham Young University (BYU) during their President’s Week break from classes.
Both PCHS swim teams train at the Park City Aquatic Center pool, located adjacent to the Ecker Hill Middle School and managed by the Park City School District. They are coached by Gadi Shamah, who is also the head coach of Park City Swim Club.
They had 15 total athletes qualify for state (ten girls and five boys) with four boys and eight girls making it to the top 16 finals. The girls placed 2nd and the boys placed 6th against 21 other teams.
This is a huge accomplishment for both teams and, in particular, for the girls.
The first place team, Ridgeline, had 28 girls competing in finals. Murray finished 3rd. Rounding out the top three for boys were Crimson Cliffs, Murray, and Sky View. Amazingly, the small group of four boys in finals were only 15 points out of 3rd place. Several swimmers earned lifetime best times and qualified for zones and sectionals on both the girls and boys side.
“Park City proved our strength in high school distance events, 200 and 500 free. Our team is young and the future is bright!” Heather Flynn said in a statement. Flynn serves as the assistant coach for the PCHS swim team, head coach for the PCHS water polo team, and head coach for the United water polo team. She added, “Small But Mighty!”

I've lived in Park City for 30 years but right off the starting line, my journalism professors expressed plaudits after class for writing more so about the small-town sports in the surrounding mountains than the urban updates they assigned. Therefore, I’m on par punning and penning Parkites' pastimes. Turning high and early through my career, I’ve worked communications for The Olympics, the Paralympics and the Special Olympics. Additionally, there's been National Geographic, Patagonia, NCAA, USA Nordic and the United States Library of Congress, so I guess you could say this ain't my first rodeo.
