Jackson, WY hosts XC race where 9 PCSS skiers podium
JACKSON, Wyoming — With nine cross country ski athletes on the podium (including the U12 boys) and 22 athletes in the top 10, along with multiple personal bests, the Park City Ski and Snowboard Team (PCSS) had much to celebrate on Saturday and Sunday in Wyoming.
Will Wicherski, Jackson Hole Ski and Snowboard Nordic Director told TownLift, “We love hosting the Johnny Curtis Memorial every chance we get. Seeing all the racers, teams, and parents out at Trail Creek is so much fun and we love competing against strong teams like Park City on our home trails. When the race day weather is perfect like last weekend it is an amazing place for athletes to compete and people to spectate nordic racing!”
Aside from Utah and Wyoming, cross country ski racers came from Montana and Idaho.
One in a series of Junior National Qualifiers (JNQ), this course offered a one kilometer long for skiers under ten years old, a 10k for under twenty-year-olds, and every distance in between for the ages in between. Some classes were a mass start, while some were interval.
“Go PCSS Cross Country! We are so proud of ALL of you!” said Christine Hind, executive director of the multi-discipline Park City Ski and Snowboard Team.
Plenty of parents took advantage of the holiday weekend and made the drive up to the ski town of Jackson. Many, if not most other cross country competitions are not hosted as close in proximity to alpine ski resorts.
Team Soldier Hollow (SOHO) from Midway also had high performances in brothers Martin, Daniel, and Philip Radu, and from Dauvernge C. Romney. The Utah Nordic Alliance (TUNA) sent a team as well.
PCSS coach and seven-time Paralympian Steve Cook once again lent not only his coaching skills to his athletes but his much appreciated Wax Tech title.
