Local author pens second book on 124-mile trek
PARK CITY, Utah—Local book author Marianne Bohr celebrated her 60th birthday in an extraordinary way. She and her husband embarked on a challenging adventure by hiking the 124-mile GR20 trail in Corsica.
The two-week trek took them through some of the most stunning landscapes and provided them with a unique opportunity to disconnect from the world and reconnect with nature.
Bohr journaled her training and her daily journey and compiled her notes into her second published book, “The Twenty: One Woman’s Trek Across Corsica on the GR20 Trail.”
In her book, the author seeks to ignite a sense of adventure in her readers and shares how resilience and tenacity are primary keys to success.
“I have always been drawn to the outdoors and have enjoyed hiking,” Bohr said. “Once we became empty-nesters, we took on bigger adventures.”
Bohr and her husband joined a group of eight that consisted of individuals from all over the world, led by an experienced French guide. The couple felt relieved to have the guidance, mainly because they were most worried about getting lost; the trail wasn’t very well marked.
Preparing for such a long trek requires a considerable amount of training. It involves getting physically fit, acquiring necessary gear, the packs the couple carried weighed 36 pounds each day, and learning outdoor survival skills. Bohr had to go through more than just the regular training. She was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis several months before. The autoimmune disease affects the joints and can cause inflammation and stiffness. Despite this challenge, Bohr preserved.
“This book is for the people that like armchair travel, people who are considering this type of challenge, and for those who are avid hikers who are looking for their next adventure,” Bohr said. “So many people don’t know where Corsica is, so I thought it would be good to shine a light on the islands.”
