Parkite Emily Campbell qualifies in Alaska for Biathlon in Kazakhstan

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Emily Campbell, a Park City High School Junior, is headed to the Junior and Youth World Championships for biathlon in Kazakhstan after qualifying for the competition in Alaska on Saturday.

She raced for Team SOHO (Soldier Hollow) and she also trains with the Park City Ski and Snowboard Nordic Team.

Chris and Jenny Campbell, travelled to Anchorage from Park City to watch their daughter, and Jenny said on Facebook, “She had some great races in Alaska at the US Biathlon trials. She had some tough competition.”

Campbell’s competitors in Alaska were from, among other places, Maine, Minnesota, Vermont, and Montana. Her age dictates that she compete to qualify in the Youth Women Category. In biathlon, coaches discretion can bump an athlete up on any given day, however.

The dates of Junior and Youth Worlds are March 4 -12 in the city of Schuchinsk, Kazakhstan.

Utah enjoyed a rare opportunity last year hosting the Junior and Youth Biathlon World Championships. The 2002 Olympic venue of Soldier Hollow in Midway was where Campbell’s older brother, Wes, PCHS class of 2021, competed.

During the Winter Olympic Games, all American biathletes compete for the National Governing Body (NGB) of US Ski and Snowboard, headquartered in Park City. U.S. Biathlon, though, is based in New Gloucester, Maine.
