Summit County continues quest for public input for Rail Trail Corridor design
SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah – Since the early 1990’s, the Utah State Parks Division has managed the Historic Union Pacific Rail Trail, commonly known as the “Rail Trail” to locals within Summit County, and in recent years the County has shown interest in taking over management of the Rail Trail from the State Parks service.
With this transition in authority, the County has initiated the planning process that looks at the Rail Trail itself and the surrounding lands, and identified this area as the Rail Trail Corridor.
The Rail Trail Corridor is a 30-mile non-motorized, arts, culture, recreation, and tourism corridor, and Summit County is asking the public’s opinion in drafting a plan for it’s future. Summit County is hosting two open houses in November, hoping to collect suggestions and improvement ideas from the community.

In August of 2021, Summit County began the process of collecting community input regarding the future of the Rail Trail Corridor, and are now in a second round of community engagement. From October 2022 to January 2023, Summit County is asking for more specific information to help design the plan for the Rail Trail Corridor.
This polished plan will be presented to the Summit County Council in February of 2023 for final revision, adoption, and implementation.
More information on the Rail Trail and how to become involved in the planning process can be found on the Summit County Website.
