Salt Lake City hosting gun buy-back event on Saturday
SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) is hosting a gun turn-in event on Saturday, June 11, in light of recent mass shootings in the U.S.
Each person who turns in a firearm will receive a $50 gift card (assault rifles are $100). Only one gift card will be given per person.
SLCPD said that this is a no-questions-asked event, meaning an ID will not be required. It is first-come, first-serve, and it is open to anyone.
Ammo will be taken, however, there will be no gift card reward.
The police department said it is likely they will run out of gift cards, “and that’s a good thing because it means we’ve gotten about 100 guns no longer wanted off our streets.”
The department also asks that firearms are unloaded and made secure before coming to the event.
“This gun buy-back effort will be a very important event for our community,” Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown said in a statement.
The event will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Public Safety Building on Saturday.
