USA Climbing hosting three world cups in Salt Lake City this month

SALT LAKE CITY — USA Climbing is hosting three International Federation of Sporting Climbing (IFSC) World Cups in bouldering, paraclimbing, and speed climbing this month in Salt Lake City.

Four medalists from climbing’s inaugural Olympic Games in Tokyo are expected to compete, including the entire men’s podium — Olympic champion Alberto Ginéz López of Spain, Salt Lake City’s own silver-medalist Nathaniel Coleman, and Austrian bronze-medalist Jakob Schubert. Women’s silver-medalist Miho Nonaka of Japan is also expected to compete.

Team USA will have a strong team with 2021 IFSC World Cup SLC Bouldering champions Sean Bailey and Natalia Grossman returning alongside Olympic Team members Colin Duffy and Brooke Raboutou. The squad also includes paraclimbing medalists Benjamin Mayforth and Hannah McFadden and speed climbing medalists Noah Bratschi and Emma Hunt.

During the 2021 competition, Salt Lake City’s altitude and optimal conditions helped Veddriq Leonardo of Indonesia set the current speed climbing world record, scaling the 15-meter wall in 5.20 seconds.
