July sales tax up 17% compared to 2020

PARK CITY — In the Park City Municipal budget report for July, sales tax was up 17% compared to July 2020. Transient room tax was also up 12% in July compared to last year.

At Thursday’s city council meeting, councilmember Tim Henney said the figures “continued the string of unbelievable and amazing record setting monthly sales tax for the community.”

The council talked about how the fall colors have been a recent boom for the local economy — with people coming to eat and drink on Main Street after exploring Big Cottonwood Canyon.

Councilmember Steve Joyce said he was told by a restaurant owner on Main St. that this past weekend was the second busiest weekend they’ve had all summer long.

“September used to be like dropping off a cliff — kids went back to school, Labor Day hit, everything emptied out. We’re now talking about October being one of the busiest weekends in the entire summer. It’s stunning,” Joyce said.

In the Park City Chamber of Commerce’s latest occupancy report, hotel bookings are slightly higher in the months ahead in spots when compared to before the pandemic in 2019.
