Communities That Care is helping to curb underage substance use

SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah. — Communities That Care Summit County (CTC) has a new campaign designed to raise awareness of the risks of underage alcohol, vaping, and drug use among Summit County youth.

Established in 2017, CTC Summit County is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping youth-serving organizations work together in Park City and broader communities. CTC fosters a culture of health through prevention by convening the community and providing effective youth substance-prevention education and resources to improve the lives of children, teens, and families.

Of the challenges facing the community, CTC Executive Director Mary Christa Smith said, “Parents want the best for their kids, but permissive parental attitudes towards youth substance use is our leading risk factor. Parental permissiveness can set kids up for lifelong dependence. Scientific studies have shown that when it comes to the reality about substance use among youth, sending mixed messages with murky boundaries is a problem. What if parents knew that adolescent substance use is literally hardwiring their kids’ brains for addiction? Would they make different choices and set clear boundaries? I think so!”

To implement this ambitious goal, CTC is providing parents, teachers, and all trusted adults with materials and talking points to help them understand and clearly communicate the risks of underage substance use.
